Definition: incompetence.

“It’s extremely difficult to govern when you control all three branches of government,” says Hastert spokesman John Feehery, a burden of which Democrats would happily relieve them.

Via Atrios, of course.

    Somehow Clinton managed.

To clarify: I have no more idea than do you why Democrats should wish to relieve "them" of the burden of John Feehery.

Actually, Clinton was still getting his Presidential feet wet when he had a "friendly" Congress to work with. Then in 1994, the Republicans took over the House, which, oddly enough, made Clinton a more effective President.

I'll leave it to others to determine whether it made him a "better" President. But by having an adversary against whom he could "triangulate", Clinton had political leverage to make policy more or less the way he wanted.

As a conservative who thought ill of Clinton, I have to admit that he was manifestly more legislatively more competent than the current ruling Republican coalition. Not only did he face down Gringrich and the "Republican revolution" capturing the hosue by shutting down the government and getting the public to blame the Republicans, but he managed to get legislative victories even in the midst of the Lewinsky phenomena. I didn't vote for GWB in 2000 based on competence issues, and I fear that it's only gotten worse. They think they're circling the wagons but in reality they're creating a circular firing squad.
